GOT SHOES? PG Residents/Business Owners Host Shoe Drive To Benefit Soles4Souls, Inc.
By Katie McGuire
Shoe Drive Contact: Suzanne Rolph-McFalls, (859) 689-7305

Chances are, you have one or two pairs of shoes in your closet that are gently used and will never be worn again. According to Soles4Souls, Inc., over 1.5 billion shoes lay idle in American closets. Here's your chance to put your idle shoes on the feet of people who really need them.

S & M Painting Services owners and Parlor Grove residents Suzanne Rolph-McFalls and Michael McFalls will be conducting a shoe drive throughout the month of August to benefit Soles4Souls. Suzanne was inspired to do something after reading Half The Sky, a book which described how poverty-stricken girls all over the world were being denied an education simply because they did not have shoes to wear to walk to school. "I went on a search to reach as many people as possible," she says. When she found Soles4Souls, she knew it was something to which she could dedicate herself. "I love this concept," she says. "It makes my heart swell at the thought that we can give those in need the chance to, quite literally, walk a mile in our shoes." Click here to read more about Suzanne's inspiration...

Where: 2277 Kyle Drive
When: August 1 - 31, 2010
What: Drop off any gently worn shoes (athletic, running, dress, sandals, pumps, heels, work boots, cleats, dance, flip flops, etc.) any time. Please tie or rubberband shoes together.

Soles4Souls is a Nashville-based charity that collects shoes and distributes them free of charge to people in need, regardless of race, religion, class, or any other criteria. Since 2005, Soles4Souls has given away over 5.5 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes, which have been distributed to people in over 125 countries, including Kenya, Thailand, Nepal and the United States. More Than Shoes
By Suzanne Rolph-McFalls

Six months ago I read a book called Half The Sky, by Nicholas Kristof. It concentrated on turning oppression into opportunity for women worldwide. I learned that young girls all over the world are often uneducated, and therefore doomed to a life of poverty and oppression, simply because they don't have a pair of shoes to wear so they can walk to school each day. That fact made me feel ill. Education is the key to changing the ills of the world as we know it, and to be denied the opportunity to learn because you don't have a pair of shoes seemed wrong on every level of thought and instinct I possess.

The next time I was in my closet–a great big walk-in closet with shoe racks, and sweater cubbies, and hanger after hanger of clothes–I couldn't help but think, “Cheese and rice, I don't use half this stuff.” The shoes in particular. There were shoes on those racks that had never even hit pavement. My husband’s side of the closet was the same way, so I thought, well, if there are girls out there who need shoes in order to get to take advantage of an opportunity to learn, then it stands to reason there are boys. And if there are boys and girls, then there must be women and men.

I went on a search for a way to reach as many people as possible. People like me and you who are so blessed as to have shoes we don't even wear collecting dust in our closets. I found Soles4Souls, The Shoe Charity, and read all about their amazing efforts to reach girls, boys, men and women, not only in the United States but worldwide, to give them shoes. Sometimes, and this was startling, the first pair they ever had. I love this concept. It makes my heart swell at the thought that we can give those in need the chance to, quite literally, walk a mile in our shoes. To walk a mile toward school or work or a place to worship.

That sounded like something I could dedicate my heart and soul toward making happen.

Since August is back to school time for so many families, I thought it would be perfect timing with the Soles4Souls Shoe Drive. Education is on our minds right now, and so are trips to go school shopping for clothes, shoes, and supplies. I ask each and every one of you to take a moment and check your closets while you are putting that new stuff away. Check your kid’s closets. Find a few pairs of shoes, any season, any type, tie the laces together or wrap them with a rubber band,
and donate them to Soles4Souls.

It’s going to be a neat feeling to go to sleep at night knowing somewhere out there someone is taking their first steps toward walking a mile in your shoes. Their first steps toward a better world for all of us.

Large New Development Proposed For Hebron

JULY 22, 2010
Update from Keith Noel
The Zone Change Committee of The Boone County Planning Commission held its first meeting last night on the proposed Toebben development. The Committee began its review of the details of the proposed development. The Committee considered such details as the proposed commercial/retail and multi-family components of the plan.

It appears that several more Committee meetings will be held before the Committee will complete its review. Once the Committee completes its review, it will take a vote that will serve as a recommendation to the full Commission. The full Commission will then take a vote that will serve as a recommendation to The Boone County Fiscal Court, which has the final authority on the development.

The next Committee meeting is set for 5pm on Wednesday August 4 in the Fiscal Courtroom (first floor of The Boone County Administration Building in Burlington). All Committee meetings are open to the public and all interested persons should attend.

Update from Keith Noel
The next step in the process for the Toebben development proposed for Stahl Road and North Bend Road (237) is a Zone Change Committee meeting at 5pm on Wednesday, July 21, in the Fiscal Courtroom on the first floor of the Boone County Administration Building (same room where July 7 Public Hearing was held) in Burlington.

The meeting is open to the public and all interested persons should attend.

The Committee meetings are critical because this is where the details of the proposed development are evaluated and specific decisions are made.

(JULY 8, 2010)
Update from Keith Noel
Last night's public hearing was extremely well-attended, with the hearing room at full capacity. Crowd was estimated to be in excess of 100 persons. The Hebron residents, including some Parlor Grove residents, raised many, many legitimate issues about the proposed development. Some of the primary issues included high density/multi-family housing (including apartment buildings), additional traffic on (inadequate) Stahl Road, additional traffic on 237, effect on already-overcrowded schools, 60 ft tall wind turbines, and commercial/retail space. The thrust of the comments were not that the land must remain undeveloped but that that the development as presently proposed has many deficiencies that will have a substantial adverse
impact on many local residents. The residents spoke loudly and clearly.

The next step is a committee meeting at 5pm on Wed., July 7 on first floor of Boone County Admin. Building in Burlington. The meeting is open to the public.

Large New Development Proposed For Hebron--July 7 Public Hearing
Contact: Keith Noel
By Keith Noel

I want to inform our Parlor Grove neighbors of a large new development proposed for Hebron. Here are the details:

  • proposed by Toebben Companies
  • development is called Rivers Pointe Estates
  • property located on north side (far side) of Stahl Road, which is on the right side of 237 just beyond the Parlor Grove roundabout
  • property consists of 334 acres
  • development will front on 237, with main entrance just north of Stahl Road; there will be 3 entrances off 237 into development
  • development will also tie into existing Stahl Road in 2 locations
  • development will be “mixed use” containing some residential, some retail/stores, and some office/commercial
  • development will have up to 864 “residential units”
  • residential units will consist of some single family houses, some attached townhome buildings, and some multi-family/apartment buildings
  • townhome buildings will be up to 3 stories in height
  • multi-family/apartment buildings will be up to 5 stories in height
  • development will have 2 wind turbines 60 feet tall

The developer needs a zone change to build this development since the current zoning on the 334 acres would not permit this type of development. Here are the details on the zone change process:

  • zone change request has been filed by Toebben
  • request is pending before Boone County Planning Commission
  • a public hearing will be held at 7:30 pm on Wednesday July 7 (next Wednesday) on the first floor of the Boone County Administration Building in Burlington; this will likely be the only public hearing on this matter
  • at the outset of the hearing, a presentation by the Planning Commission staff and the developer will be given explaining the development
  • the public will be allowed to speak at the hearing after the presentation is complete; the public will be allowed to make any comments they wish about the development; the comments will be “part of the record”
  • after the hearing is concluded, the matter will be assigned to the Zone Change Committee of the Commission; the Zone Change Committee will hold one or more meetings at later dates; during the Committee meetings, the Committee will further examine the details of the development
  • the Committee meetings are open to the public but the public is limited in their right to speak at these meetings; the Committee will only consider issues that were raised by the public at the July 7 public hearing; no new information or issues may be raised after the public hearing has concluded
  • the Committee will eventually vote on the zone change requested by the developer; the Committee’s vote then goes to the full Planning Commission as a recommendation
  • the full Commission will eventually vote on the requested zone change
  • the Commission’s vote then finally goes to the Fiscal Court for final decision
  • the entire process will take several months before a final decision will be rendered

If permitted, this development will have a significant impact on Hebron. Depending on your opinion, that impact may be positive or negative but it cannot be denied that it will have a large impact on Hebron.

I want our Parlor Grove neighbors to know about this proposed development and, in particular, the significance of the July 7 public hearing. If someone has an opinion, either in favor or against, about the development, they need to attend the July 7 hearing and voice it. After that date, they likely will not have another chance to voice their opinion.

More information about the development and the zone change process can be obtained by contacting the Boone County Planning Commission (ask for Kevin Wall) at 334-2196.

237 SAFETY UPDATE by Katie McGuire

In 2004, the commencement of the reconstruction/widening of a 3.6 mile stretch of SR 237N starting at I-275 seemed questionable. Amidst that climate, SMI Home Solutions was petitioning the Boone County Planning Commission for a zone change to allow construction of a new subdivision bordering our neighborhood. The proposed subdivision added 111 new houses whose sole entrance/exit was at the S-curve of SR 237 between Cardinal Cove and Parlor Grove. Protests by residents in Parlor Grove and throughout the community were widespread and organized. Ultimately, SMI Homes was granted the zone change with a stipulation that construction could not begin until the new SR 237 was complete.

Today, the SR 237 reconstruction/widening project is under way and projected to be finished in the fall of 2009. Details of the project are outlined in this December 5, 2007 KYTC press release. At the same time, SMI Home Solution's future is in question as they are being investigated by the FBI. While details of the investigation are not being disclosed, Channel 9 news sited sources who compared the investigation to the fraud probe in the Bill Erpenbeck case in this report.

Please click here for recent Cincinnati Enquirer coverage regarding SMI Homes.

A WORD ABOUT THIS SITE by Katie McGuire

What did you do with your snow days? Me? I decided to finish a project that has been a long time in the making. Well, maybe I shouldn't say finish, exactly. As I often tell my clients, a web site is almost always a work in progress.

It all started a couple of years ago when a zoning controversy put to the forefront a desire for the community to be able to communicate quickly and easily. After the upheaval, I thought, "Our neighborhood--and neighbors--are so great, we really should have our own web site to keep us connected." And so I went to work with this little grassroots effort. I picked my neighbors' brains, bribing some with coffee and homemade muffins. I even recruited some to do leg work for me. Now, I present you with the results...so far.

I look forward to feedback and especially hope people will sign up (at least) for the updates e-mail list, which I have set up for cases precisely like the one we had a couple of years ago. I will use this list to let people know about new features to this web site, as well, but I do not intend to send any kind of regular e-mails at this time.

I'm eager to hear how people are interested in using this tool and I am working on a message board which I think could be helpful on a number of occasions as well as just for fun! Enjoy and please bare with me through the growing pains!

Much thanks to Michele Hart, Matt Anderson, Sandra Smith and Becky Ralenkotter!
